There’s a moment every fall when you walk out the shop door in the morning, look up at the mountain and see it: the first real white on the upper slopes. That moment has arrived in Vail, and around here it means one thing. Ski season is close.

We’ve been fitting skiers at the base of Gondola One since 1977, and the start of a new season still gets us as excited as it did the first time. Whether you’re planning a week in Vail Village or you’ve already got your boots by the door, here’s what you need to know about the 2026/27 Vail ski season, and how to make your first days on the mountain the easy part of your trip.

When does Vail open for the 2026/27 ski season?

Vail Mountain is targeting Friday, November 13, 2026 for Opening Day. As always, that date depends on Mother Nature and snowmaking temperatures, so keep an eye on the official conditions as it gets closer. Beaver Creek is targeting November 25.

Early season in Vail is a little different from February. Expect a smaller set of open runs, usually a handful of groomers served by the gondolas, with more terrain opening as the snow piles up. It’s a great time to shake off the summer legs, and a smart time to make sure your skis are sharp, because early-season snow is firm and man-made.

The busiest weeks to plan around

If you’re booking a trip, these are the dates when Vail Village fills up and rentals go fast:

  • Thanksgiving week (Thanksgiving is November 26)
  • Christmas through New Year’s, the single busiest stretch of the season
  • Martin Luther King Jr. weekend (January 16–18, 2027)
  • Presidents’ Day weekend (February 13–15, 2027)
  • Spring break, which runs on and off from early March into April

If your trip lands on one of those weeks, reserve your gear before you get here. You’ll skip the guesswork and make sure we have your size and the skis you want waiting for you.

How to rent skis in Vail without wasting a morning

Nobody flies to Colorado to stand in a rental line. Here’s how our regulars do it:

  1. Reserve online and save 20%. Every ski and snowboard package booked through our online reservation system is 20% off walk-in rates. See all of the packages and daily prices on our Vail ski rentals page.
  2. Pick up the night before. Stop by after 4:30 p.m. the evening before your first ski day. We’ll fit your boots, set your bindings and have you ready to go, so your first morning is coffee, boots on and a short walk to the gondola.
  3. Bring a physical credit card. It’s required for every rental, so don’t leave it back at the condo.
  4. Leave your gear with us overnight. Storage is free for all of our rental equipment. No hauling skis through the village or onto the shuttle.

Not sure which package is right? Sport skis are forgiving and easy to turn, perfect if you’re newer to skiing or love cruising groomers. Performance skis suit strong intermediate and advanced skiers who want something more responsive. And if you want the newest skis on the market, our demo skis in Vail are the way to go, especially once the Back Bowls open. We also have junior ski packages for the kids and adult snowboard rentals for the riders in your crew.

Bringing your own skis? Get them ready now

If your skis have been sitting in the garage since April, they need some attention before Opening Day. Dry bases and dull edges make early-season snow feel a lot harder than it is. Our shop does full tunes, edge and wax work and repairs, usually with overnight turnaround. Learn more about Vail ski tuning and repairs, or read our guide on how to get you and your ski gear winter ready.

Tired of carrying skis and boots back and forth all season? We offer daily, monthly and seasonal ski storage in Vail Village, plus seasonal lockers and baskets. Seasonal lockers tend to sell out, so if they’re full, hop on our locker waitlist.

What’s happening in Vail this winter

The fun doesn’t stop when the lifts do. Vail has announced a winter concert lineup that includes ILLENIUM at Dobson Arena on December 11, 2026, and DJ Ian Asher on January 16, 2027. There will also be après DJs at the base of Gondola One on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., which is just a few steps from our front door. Drop your skis off with us and head straight to the party.
